Kids Think Eyeglasses Make Other Kids Look Smart

Young children tend to think that other kids with glasses look smarter than kids who don't wear glasses, according to a new study.

(iDad) - Young children tend to think that other kids with glasses look smarter than kids who don't wear glasses, according to a new study.

Children between the ages of 6 and 10 who were surveyed for the study also thought that kids wearing glasses looked more honest than children who don't wear glasses.

Otherwise, the survey suggested that children don't tend to judge the attractiveness of their peers who wear glasses when asked about their appearance, potential as a playmate or likely athletic abilities.

The findings might give children some comfort when they are fitted with their first pair of eyeglasses, said lead study author Jeffrey Walline, assistant professor of optometry at Ohio State University.

"If the impression of looking smarter will appeal to a child, I would use that information and tell the child it is based on research," Walline said. "Most kids getting glasses for the first time are sensitive about how they're going to look. Some kids simply refuse to wear glasses because they think they'll look ugly."

The study is published in the May issue of the journal Ophthalmic and Physiological Optics.

Walline surveyed children in this age range because they are more likely to be prescribed eyeglasses than contact lenses. Generally, children with nearsightedness are diagnosed with myopia and receive their first corrective lenses at around age 8. Teen-agers were not surveyed because they are routinely fitted with contact lenses if they want them.

For the study, Walline and colleagues assembled a series of 24 pairs of pictures of children for comparison. The children in each pair differed by gender and ethnicity, and each pair included one child with glasses and one child without glasses.

Eighty young children – 42 girls and 38 boys – were surveyed. Of those, 30 kids (38 percent) wore glasses, 34 had at least one sibling with glasses and almost two-thirds had at least one parent who wore glasses.

The questionnaire featured six questions, many based on similar studies in adults. When presented with each pair of photos, the participants were asked which of the two children pictured: would you rather play with; looks smarter; looks better at playing sports; do you think is better looking; looks more shy; and looks more honest?

On average, two thirds of the participating children said they thought that kids wearing glasses looked smarter than kids not wearing glasses. And 57 percent of the participants said they thought kids with glasses appeared to be more honest. Both kids with and without glasses thought other kids wearing glasses looked smarter.

Walline said the findings suggest that media portrayals associating spectacles with intelligence may be reinforcing a stereotype that even young children accept.

In the case of the other four questions in the survey, the answers were not consistent enough to suggest that glasses made a difference in how the kids felt about the pictures they were examining.

Other trends emerged, however, that had nothing to do with whether the kids in the pictures were wearing glasses and which supported conventional wisdom about kids' opinions. Both boys and girls said they thought that boys appeared to be better at playing sports. Boys indicated they would rather play with boys, and girls said they would prefer playing with girls. Both boys and girls thought the opposite gender looked more shy. Girls also were more likely than boys to pick their own gender when asked which child looked more honest.

The fact that the question of attractiveness yielded no significantly different answers for children with or without glasses suggests that kids don't automatically consider kids with glasses to be unattractive, Walline said.

"The concern about attractiveness with glasses seems to be more internal to a particular child rather than an indicator of how they'll feel about other people who wear glasses," Walline said.

(iDad) - The chances of being harassed or sexually solicited online increases when young people interact with others via instant messaging and chat rooms. These forums may encourage impulsive and risk-taking behavior. The July 2008 issue of the Harvard Mental Health Letter describes several risky electronic arenas and offers tips to help keep kids safe.

Instant Messaging: This technology enables people to send text messages back and forth instantaneously while using computers, cell phones, and other electronic devices. It appears to put young people at risk for both bullying and sexual solicitation.

Chat rooms: These online forums enable people to exchange text messages, engage in virtual conversations, and post images. Researchers think that chat rooms pose risks for sexual solicitation and victimization not only because these venues enable participants to communicate directly and privately, but also because some sites encourage the use of obscene language and sexual talk.

Social networking sites: Sites such as Facebook or MySpace allow people to create personal profiles and communicate online. Researchers have found these sites are not as risky as other online interactions such as instant messaging and chat rooms.

Dr. Michael Miller, editor in chief of the Harvard Mental Health Letter, suggests that to protect young people online you need to focus on the children’s online behavior rather than the technology:

• Be aware of what children are doing online and to whom they are talking.
• Keep the computer in a family area.
• Stay engaged as children get older.
• Help teenagers learn how to keep themselves safe.

To prevent sexual victimization, educate young people about the dangers of online interactions. You can say that it is all right to have sexual feelings, but not to broadcast them online.

Good News Gamer, Sony Will Provide PSP Rental Game Service!!

According to alleged consumer surveys, a Develop magazine report, and CNET’s news blog, the PSP will soon receive a digital video game rental service and possible music downloads.

As outlined in a GameSpot news piece, Joystiq posted a scan of a consumer survey that stated "the service will enable you to download a fixed number of games during your subscription period… renew[ing] weekly, monthly, or for some other time period."

Then it has been suggested by Develop magazine that developers have known about the service since GDC. Finally, CNET’s news blog has revealed that Sony is currently in preliminary talks with various record labels in order to bring an iTunes-like music service to the Sony handheld device.

All of this is little more than pieced-together, unsubstantiated speculation. As such, take all this with a large grain of salt. Still, Sony has been perturbed that Apple stole the portable music device market they created out from under them for a long while now. Moreover, the PSP (or even the rumored PSP Go!) along with a solid download service for purchasing and renting digital entertainment could go a long way toward reestablishing their dominance in the sector.

SAW Game

SAW is an action horror title based on the horror movies. It is being developed by Zombie Studios and published by Konami. Originally, the title was being developed by Brash Entertainment, but Konami picked up the publishing rights to the game after the company went under due to financial difficulties. The game will play like an old-school adventure game, where you must look for clues to progress through the adventure without very much help from the game itself.

Superficially, I am a little worried because movie tie-ins tend to be terrible; they usually have small budgets and the transition to a new medium can be rough, especially for movies like Saw. That being said, Konami developed the Silent Hill franchise, so if anyone could do Saw correctly, it would be Konami and Zombie Studios.

The game will take place between the first and second movie, set in an abandoned asylum. Players will have to solve different Jigsaw traps scattered around the place. The plot will center on the kidnapping of Detective David Tapp by his suspect, the Jigsaw Killer. Players will have to work through several different traps, which will focus on people with connections to the Detective. Players will not only solve puzzles, but they will also fight with Jigsaw's minions. Thankfully, you will be able to pickup different weapons with which to defend yourself. Throughout the game, players will have moral choices to make, much like in Bioshock and Splinter Cell: Double Agent. Just like those games, these choices could result in different endings.

The game will be played from a third-person camera angle. The gameplay is puzzle-intensive, so Zombie Studios created the game with a premise that there would be very little help provided to the player from the game. For example, your character could wake up with a reverse bear-trap wrapped around their head (this is just like the trap that was used on Amanda Young in the first film). You would then have to solve different puzzles in attempt to unlock the trap before it rips your character's jaw apart. An example of this might be looking at an object in the mirror at a specific angle, so you can solve the puzzle. After you unlock the bear trap, players will have the opportunity to explore the environment and look for clues to reach the next puzzle. Onscreen prompts will trigger interaction, so approaching a drawer or a corpse would give you a prompt to search the objects. You may find a key that would help you gain access to another room. Cryptic messages can also be found that may help you avoid danger. Players will also encounter other people at the asylum who are trying to solve the puzzles. These people could be helpful by providing you with clues to progress further into the storyline, but others will try to kill you.

The game will be running on the Unreal 3 Engine, so it has potential to look great, but this is not a guarantee. Some of the characters look generic and the color pallet is very grey. The environments seem detailed and they are also very reminiscent of the locations that are portrayed in the films. The developers visited asylums for research and inspiration, but they hope to keep the game as close to the Saw universe as possible. I hope Zombie Studios work hard on the sound effects because that could make or break the game, since bad implementation could ruin the atmosphere. It has also been confirmed that Charlie Clouser who composed the music for all the movies will also compose the soundtrack for the video game.

Konami took a risk by picking up the license to Saw because movie-licensed are usually not very good, although, Konami is familiar with the genre since they've produced similar games in the past like the Silent Hill series. If they are able to maintain the fear factor throughout the entire experience, develop an interesting storyline, and create a great atmosphere, then I'm sure Saw will be a successful game. But, I am worried about how Zombie Studios will implement the moral dilemmas, since survival will be the most important aspect of the game. What other choice is there?

SAW will arrive on X360, PS3, and PC this Halloween. The release will coincide with the sixth movie in the franchise. Stay tuned for more info!
